Create a course

Build an LMS course by completing its five phases (content, settings, prerequisites and evaluations) and publish it.

Written by Angad Singh

Creating a course in the LMS has two parts:

  1. Add a new course. See Add a new course.

  2. Build the course by adding its content, settings, prerequisites and evaluations. This article covers this part.

Tip: Build the course's quiz first, so it's ready to add. See Create a quiz.

Find your course

Once you add a course, it appears in the Instructor Panel.

It also appears on the All Courses dashboard.

You can open the course you want to build from either place. For an overview of the Instructor Panel, see About the Instructor Panel.

Build a course

1. Go to the Instructor Panel or the All Courses dashboard and find the course you want to build.

2. Click the course to open the Course Creation window.

The Course Creation window has five phases where you enter the course information, properties, prerequisites, evaluations and more.

3. Complete all five phases.

4. Click Publish at the top right to make the course available in your workspace.

Note: Building a course can take time. You can save the course as a Draft, and save each phase as you go, then come back to finish it before you publish.

Course settings

  • Basics: course code, categories and duration.

  • Content: lectures can hold SOPs, PDFs, videos and PowerPoint files.

  • Access: Public courses allow self-enrollment. Private courses are assigned; users can request enrollment, and the requests appear under Enrollment requests.

  • Completion window: if a trainee doesn't finish in time, the course is marked overdue.

  • Attempts: set the maximum number of attempts and a lockout.

  • Refresher: automatically reassign the course every year.

  • Prerequisites: courses that must be completed first.

In-class (instructor-led) courses

For an in-class session, set the location, instructor, number of seats, a waitlist and auto-enroll.

Trainees enter an attendance code, which acts as their e-signature, and the instructor marks each trainee present or absent. Planned and actual instructor hours are tracked.

After you publish

  • Assign the course to users or to one or more roles. See Assign a course to a user.

  • Share the course with other facilities using Course Share. With Private access, the course is visible there but only assigned people can open it.

  • Link the course to a skill level so that passing it updates the trainee's Skills Matrix and radar chart automatically.

  • Add the course to a learning plan.
