What the 5G principle is

The 5G principle in lean manufacturing is a holistic approach to operational excellence. It emphasizes understanding, respect and continuous improvement.

By focusing on the 5Gs, Gemba, Gembutsu, Genjitsu, Genri and Gensoku, an organization can identify opportunities for improvement, drive efficiency and build a culture of continuous learning and growth.

5G	Description	Purpose
Gemba	Go to the actual place where work is done to observe operations firsthand and identify inefficiencies.	Gain insights into the actual work environment and identify opportunities for improvement.
Gembutsu	Go to the source to see and understand the actual products, components or materials used in the production process.	Identify the root causes of problems and implement effective solutions to improve quality and efficiency.
Genjitsu	Base all decisions and actions on real data, facts and observations rather than assumptions.	Understand the current state of operations and make informed decisions to drive improvement.
Genri	Understand and apply fundamental lean principles such as respect for people, continuous improvement and waste reduction.	Create a foundation for operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Gensoku	Establish standardized work practices, guidelines and rules to ensure consistency, efficiency and quality in operations.	Foster consistency, efficiency and a culture of continuous improvement within the organization.
